The Scribbles Between Us is a 2-minute CG animated short film directed, written, and animated by Arnav Vaidyanathan.
The film follows Alia, a young girl making a farewell card for her brother as he leaves for college. When she overhears him excitedly talking about finally leaving home, her anxiety and insecurities take on a life of their own. Scribbles, a monstrous creature made entirely of racing thoughts, tears out of the card and begins destroying the memories around her. This film depicts Scribbles not as a villain, but as a portrait of unchecked fear when we let it speak for the people we love.
There is a unique kind of love between siblings, one that transcends distance and change, yet stays silent and unexpressed. When faced with moments of transition in life, those unspoken feelings can quickly evolve into fear, insecurity, and uncertainty. This film is one of the most personal projects I have ever made, born from my experience of moving away from India for college and the fear of drifting from the person I love most, my sister.

Meet the characters of The Scribbles Between Us!
Alia
Alia is a crafty six-year-old who loves her older brother dearly. However, with him leaving for college soon, Alia is nervous that he'll forget about her. Alia is an introvert, and tends to overthink... a lot. She is very imaginative and creative, which causes some of her fears or nightmares to step into the real world.
Scribbles
Scribbles is a menacing representation of Alia's brother, who shows up when Alia starts worrying that her brother will forget about her in college. He is erratic, manipulative, and truly heartless. He loves playing with Alia's feelings, fears, and will not stop until he consumes her fully.
